On most Tuesday and Thursday nights, Augusta State University students roll out a piece of linoleum and practice break dancing.

"I've been doing this off and on for about five years," said Harold Dillon, who will teach the dance at the Family Y beginning Friday, Sept. 5.

Mr. Dillon and some of his fellow dancers showed their stuff Aug. 19 in front of the Wilson Family Y, with that familiar piece of linoleum rolled out on the sidewalk. The group has expanded recently with the addition of a couple of military service members from Fort Gordon. In July, the group, named Mixed Motionz, placed second at the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers talent show.

Spc. Eric Chan, who is in the Army's 15th Signal Brigade, and Seaman Apprentice Dustin Hardison, who is in the Navy Information Operations Command at Fort Gordon, are the new members.

"There are about 10 of us," said Spc. Chan. "A lot of us are temporary, but we're all bound because of dance."

During the demo in front of the Family Y, dancers took turns on the linoleum, performing spins on their heads and other moves that looked much like floor routines in gymnastics.

"We're trying to get people to see what we'll be doing in the (Family Y) class," said Mr. Dillon.

Half of the class will be break dancing and the other half will focus on hip-hop. The class will be from 7 to 8 p.m. each Friday and is targeted at teens 16 and older. Joni Robbins, from Statesboro, Ga., will teach the hip-hop portion.

Ms. Robbins, who was with the Southern Dance Academy, performed with the group at Atlanta Hawks basketball games and during the Super Bowl halftime show in 2005.

The class is $20 a month for Family Y members and $40 for nonmembers.
