Julie's House is grateful to have caring volunteer

Charles Evans doesn't mind being a gofer for Julie's House.

"I try to do whatever I can," he said. "If Pat (Bourke, the executive director) calls me up and asks me to go pick up something, I'll go. That's why I say I'm a gofer. But I don't mind, because I enjoy helping out."

Julie's House is a crisis center for women and their children. The mission of the center is to provide a safe environment where women can receive services, food and support while learning the skills they need to live independently.

Many of the women the organization serves are homeless or are victims of domestic violence.

Mr. Evans picks up and delivers donations and helps out occasionally with minor repairs at the house. He also assists with the organization's fundraisers.

Helping others is how he likes to spend his retirement years, Mr. Evans said.

"What I do benefits the organization, but it also helps to keep me busy," he said. "I enjoy doing things for other people, and since I'm retired, this is a great time for me to do it. Otherwise, I would be just sitting at home.

''So, if people have a chance to help others, they need to do it."

Mr. Evans' eagerness to help is a testament to his generosity, Ms. Bourke said.

"He always makes himself available and does it with no hesitation," she said. "He picks up donations and makes deliveries using his own vehicle, his own gas and his own time. He's someone I know we can depend on."
