Georgia freshman out for the season
Georgia freshman Charles White will miss the season with an Achilles' tendon injury, hurting the team's depth at linebacker.
White, from Columbia, was expected to play on special teams and as a backup at linebacker, according to coach Mark Richt . White suffered the injury Thursday.
Richt put his team through a 45-minute scrimmage in full pads on Friday, one day after the team's scrimmage at Sanford Stadium.
Richt said he decided the team needed more contact work after he reviewed film of Thursday's practice.
The Bulldogs might not settle on who is the No. 2 tailback between Richard Samuel and Caleb King until Thursday, two days before the Georgia Southern game.
King, slowed by a hamstring injury, didn't practice again Friday and isn't expected to go today.
- Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson decided a rare off weekend is the best way to have his players ready for Thursday night's season opener against Jacksonville State.
Johnson held practice for an hour before giving the team today and Sunday off.
Johnson said Friday he has "a pretty good idea of who will start" at most positions. The exceptions are left guard and right tackle.
A.J. Smith and Cord Howard , each slowed by injuries, are the top candidates at left guard. Senior David Brown would start at right tackle if healthy.
- Prosecutors say Clemson safety DeAndre McDaniel will be accepted into a program for first-time offenders to resolve charges of aggravated assault and battery.
Clemson coach Tommy Bowden said Friday he will make a recommendation to athletic director Terry Don Phillips next week on McDaniel's status with the team.
- Bill Curry , the first head coach for Georgia State's fledgling program, hired Chris Ward and Anthony Midget as assistant coaches, completing his staff.
