GreenJackets earn split with Tourists
In Asheville, N.C., Madison Bumgarner pitched a four-hit shutout and Nick Noonan homered as the Augusta GreenJackets beat the Asheville Tourists 1-0 on Wednesday in the first game of a South Atlantic League doubleheader.
Asheville won the nightcap, 3-2, to salvage a split.
l Augusta State coach Skip Fite has signed seven players for the 2009 season.
The newcomers include four pitchers (Dillon Roark , Trey Ripley , Chase Johnston and Wilson Taylor ), a shortstop (Ed Koncel ), catcher (Casey Colbert ) and outfielder (Caleb Saggus ).
Roark was a first-team, junior college All-America selection who led Joliet (Ill.) Junior College to the NJCAA Division III National Championship.
Koncel, a teammate of Roark's, was a third-team All-America pick. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft last week.
Saggus played at Washington-Wilkes High School where he hit .448 and stole 37 bases.
Golf
Jag player receives Golfweek accolade
Augusta State freshman Henrik Norlander has been named an honorable mention All-American by Golfweek .
Last week, he was a PING/Golf Coaches Association of America third-team All-America pick.
- In West Point, Miss., Augusta's Lee Knox shot 2-under-par 70 on Wednesday and trails by three after two rounds of the Southern Junior Golf Championship at Old Waverly Golf Club.
Knox is at 1-under 141 overall in the 15-18 division. Andrew Noto , of Luling, La., shot 68 and leads the way at 138.
College Football
Curry to be the first Georgia State coach
Almost 50 years after he began his college playing career at Georgia Tech, Bill Curry will become the first coach of Georgia State's new football program today.
Georgia State will begin play in 2010 as a Football Championship Subdivision team (formerly Div-ision I-AA). The Panthers will compete in the Colonial Athletic Association and will play home games at the Georgia Dome.
The 65-year-old Curry played at Georgia Tech from 1960-64 and coached the Yellow Jackets from 1980-86.
- Former West Virginia coach Don Nehlen was recuperating Wednesday, a day after having triple heart bypass surgery.
The 72-year-old Nehlen is West Virginia's winningest football coach with a 149-93-4 record in 21 seasons.
Basketball
Gamecock walk-ons given scholarhships
South Carolina basketball coach Darrin Horn has granted scholarships to walk-ons Branden Conrad and Robert Wilder .
Conrad, a 6-foot-2 guard, played in 10 games last season, while Wilder, a 6-1 guard, played in six.
Horn's move leaves the Game-cocks with 11 scholarship players, two fewer than the NCAA allows.
- In Atlanta, Janel McCarville had 25 points and seven assists to help the New York Liberty beat Atlanta 81-77 on Wednesday night and keep the expansion Dream winless.

Federer win streak on grass reaches 55
In Halle, Germany, Roger Federer shook off his lopsided French Open final loss, extending his grasscourt streak to 55 matches with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Michael Berrer at the Gerry Weber Open.
James Blake rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Benjamin Becker .
Cycling
Ex-world champion is barred from Tour
In Paris, former world cycling champion Tom Boonen was barred from this year's Tour de France after testing positive for cocaine.
Tour organizers said the rest of Boonen's Quick Step team remains eligible to compete in the race.
