Lady Pacers' player named All-American
USC Aiken's Jessica Strickland was named an NCAA Division II All-American for the second consecutive season by Louisville Slugger and the National Fast-pitch Coaches Association.
A third-team pick in 2007, the junior from North Charleston, S.C., was named to the second team after batting .373 with 14 doubles, seven home runs and 31 RBI.
Strickland, the only softball All-American in USC Aiken history, is the school's all-time leader in home runs (28), RBI (110) and total bases (305).
Women's Golf
Ex-Evans resident is in second place
In Lawrenceville, Ga., former Evans resident Alina Lee is in second place after the first round of the Greater Atlanta Women's Amateur Championship.
Lee, who now plays for the Georgia women's golf team, shot 3-over-par 74 at Northwood Country Club and trails Mariah Stackhouse , of Riverdale, by a shot.
Lee, a junior, played in four fall events at Georgia. She didn't play in any spring tournaments because of an injury and didn't make the traveling team to the NCAA Women's Golf Champion-ship, which starts this week in Albuquerque, N.M.
Former Augusta State women's golf coach Laura Coble , a three-time winner of this event, is tied for fifth after shooting 78. Augusta's Sarah Mooney , a member of the Augusta State women's team, had 80 and is tied for ninth.
Hockey
Goulet's Lynx jersey available in auction
Jerseys of Augusta Lynx captain Louis Goulet and former Lynx players Brad Ralph , of the Columbia Inferno, and Dan Sullivan , of the Pensacola Ice Pilots, are being auctioned online as part of the Professional Hockey Players' Association's 4th Annual Captains' Club Jersey Auction.
The auction, being conducted at PHPA.com and ECHL.com through eBay, features game-worn jerseys from the captain of each of the ECHL's 25 teams. The auction will run until 9 p.m. Sunday.
- The Boston Bruins re-signed veteran defenseman Aaron Ward to a multiyear contract extension.
Women's Basketball
New coach fills out South Carolina staff
New South Carolina coach Dawn Staley added three assistant coaches, including former Tennessee standouts -- and Staley's Olympic teammates -- Nikki McCray and Carla McGhee .
Lisa Boyer , part of Staley's staff at Temple the past six years, followed her boss to South Carolina.
Staley, McCray and McGhee were all part of the U.S. women's team that won Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996.
Auto Racing
Shakeup continues on Montoya's team
Juan Pablo Montoya will have his third crew chief in a month when Brian Pattie takes over the No. 42 Dodge for this week's race at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
Pattie replaces Jimmy Elledge , who was put in charge of the car four races ago in a crew shakeup at Chip Ganassi Racing. Elledge initially swapped places with Donnie Wingo , who guided Montoya's transition from Formula One to NASCAR but was moved to Reed Sorenson 's crew in the swap.
Montoya is 16th in points with one top-10 finish this season.
- Lloyd Moore , a NASCAR winner in 1950 and the oldest former driver, has died. He was 95.
Moore died in his sleep Sunday in Frewsburg, N.Y., in the home where he was born in 1912, according to NASCAR's Web site.
Tennis
U.S. salvages split in World Team Cup
In Duesseldorf, Germany, James Blake gave the United States a split of its two singles matches against Argentina at the World Team Cup.
Blake beat Guillermo Canas 7-6 (4), 6-4. Argentina rebounded with Juan Ignacio Chela defeating Wayne Odesnik 7-5, 6-1 in the Red Group.
