Augusta-area attorney Willie Saunders did not qualify to run for district attorney, which hands the election to interim DA Ashley Wright.
His missing the deadline was among some surprises on the final day of qualifying for local, state and federal elections.
Jimmie Lee Sullivan showed up at Richmond County Democratic headquarters at the 11th hour Friday to qualify to run for sheriff without required certified documents. He had his high-school diploma, as required by law, but it had not been certified, according to party Chairman Lowell Greenbaum.
Mr. Saunders, 38, said Friday afternoon that he arrived at the secretary of state's office with his cashier's check but missed the noon deadline by five minutes.
He had been delayed from making the trip to Atlanta earlier in the week because of a death in the family.
Mr. Saunders worked at the district attorney's office for eight years and went into private practice in 2003. He was appointed a part-time juvenile court judge in January 2007.
Ms. Wright, who the governor picked last month to fill the district attorney's office vacated by Daniel Craig's appointment to the Superior Court bench, qualified to run as the Republican candidate earlier this week.
No one qualified to run in the election as a Democrat, according to the secretary of state's Web page.
Ms. Wright, 40, has worked at the office for nearly 12 years. It is responsible for prosecuting felony offenses and other duties in Richmond, Columbia and Burke counties.
