Amen Corner: 'Whatever Is Lovely'


WHAT: Local author Marsha Maurer will sign copies of her new book, Whatever is Lovely: Design for an Elegant Spirit, at the Columbia County Library’s Books Alive Festival.

9:15 p.m.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Maurer is also the author of With Healing Wings: Prayers for Those Who Hurt and Those Who Care (2006), A Fragrant Fullness: The Spiritual Essence of Everyday Life (2003) and In the Garden: A Collection of Prayers for Everyday, which won the Georgia Author of the Year award for Inspirational Nonfiction in 2000.

THE BOOK: Whatever is Lovely combines stories, Scripture, quotes, humor and photographs in a book that draws from Maurer’s interests in style and design. Design principles including comfort, economy, grace and simplicity are normally used to enhance homes, wardrobes and gardens. The book examines them in the context of life and relationships, Maurer said.

THE TITLE: Whatever is Lovely was inspired by Philippians 4:8, which introduces the book: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.”

QUOTE: “I am concerned that in our noisy, crass and frantic world, less-than-admirable influences often determine women’s priorities and values. It is often comfortable to make choices based on what is popular, ingrained or convenient,” Maurer said. “Whatever is Lovely reminds women that even small everyday choices – of pace, priorities, perspective, even produce – are significant.”
