Rev. Phelps dies at 74


The Rev. Canon Neal Phelps, a longtime priest at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, died Wednesday in Augusta. He was 74.

A funeral Mass will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church, 331 Wheeler Road. The Right Rev. Scott Benhase, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia, will officiate, with the Rev. Jason Haddox assisting.

Phelps accepted a call to be rector of St. Augustine’s in 1977. He served there until October 2003, when Bishop Henry Louttit, the ninth Episcopal Bishop of Georgia, asked him to serve as his Canon to the Ordinary. Phelps retired in 2009 after 34 years of service in ministry.

Spring vendor showcase

More than 30 vendors will display arts, crafts, home décor and accessories at a Spring vendor showcase at The Quest Church.

The showcase is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the church, 4020 Washington Road, Martinez.
