Apple Fest returns

The annual Apple Fest at St. John’s United Methodist Church is 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the church, on the corner of Richland and Newberry avenues in Aiken.

The festival includes freshly trucked-in apples from North Carolina, a breakfast cafe, a twice-loved treasures sale, silent auction, Apple Seed Lunch Cafe, baked goods, quilts, books and entertainment.

Proceeds benefit local charities, including The Camp Sharigan Reading Orienteering Program, The Golden Harvest Backpack Food Program and the Red Cross. See for more information.

Deadline extended

The deadline for the Emma Lazarus poetry contest has been extended to Nov. 18.

Middle school and high school students are invited to submit poems about liberty to the contest, sponsored by The Augus­ta Jewish Community Cen­ter and Augusta Jewish Federation.

The contest is part of a special exhibit, Emma Lazarus: Voice of Liberty, Voice of Conscience, at the community center from Jan. 7-21.

Poems should be inspired by the work of Lazarus, who wrote The New Colossus, the sonnet inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty.

Winners will be asked to read their poems at a ceremony at the community center at 2 p.m. Jan. 8. Call (706) 228-3636 for more information or an entry form.
