When a scheduling change in the season left the Augusta Choral Society with several weeks of open rehearsal time, another concert was added. The choral group will perform the Brahms’ Ein Deutches Requiem at 7:30 p.m. April 21 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
“Our last concert in February was love songs, and our last concert of the season has a Memorial Day theme. We are adding something more classical. It gives a nice balance,” said Carolyn Dolen, the choral society’s executive director.
The Easter season is a traditional time to perform a requiem. Other groups in the area have performed requiems by other composers this spring.
The church setting of St. Paul’s is the perfect venue for the Brahms’ work, she said. Plus, it fits in well with the decision to use an organ rather than an orchestra.
“The facility is not only visually beautiful, but it has wonderful acoustics and a wonderful organ,” Dolen said.
The performance will feature Keith Shafer on organ and soloists Laquita Mitchell, soprano, and Christian Elser, bass. In addition, students from Presbyterian College and several individual vocalists, who enjoy this style of choral music, have joined with the choral society to present this concert.
Because this concert was added after the season was announced, it is not included in the season ticket package. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for senior citizens and $10 for students.
