A photograph is an emotion frozen in time.
Family photographs tend to focus on momentous occasions and the emotions that go along with them - a child's first day of school, a new car purchase, the joys of Christmas morning.
Reporters tell a story with words - sometimes many, many words. They have sentences and paragraphs to get down the details of what happened to whom, when, where and why.
News photographers, on the other hand, have an added element to consider when shooting a photograph for a story: They have to capture all the emotion, all the news itself, in a single shot.
As 2004 draws to a close, the staff photographers of The Augusta Chronicle have chosen their favorite photographs of the year to share with readers.
Here's a look back.
