'elephant shell'

ARTIST: Tokyo Police Club

RELEASED: March 25

MY THOUGHTS: This is the first full-length album by the Canadian indie group Tokyo Police Club. After their heralded A Lesson in Crime EP, they definitely had to come through big.

Elephant Shell was well worth the wait. They have fine- tuned their sound, slowed their songs, and capitalized on their indie pop style. For those concerned that the group traded their effective independent roots for refinement, one only has to listen to the clever bass line on the first track, Centennial, to know Tokyo Police Club has not lost its magic.

'eat this not that!'

AUTHOR: David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding

MY THOUGHTS: Have you ever wondered exactly what you were eating when you went to restaurants such as McDonald's or P.F. Chang's? If so, you would like this book. It chronicles some of the most -- and least -- healthful foods you can eat in the world's largest franchises.

It shows options that are similar; how choosing one food over another saves you hundreds of calories and grams of fat. An example in the book is eating a char-grilled sandwich from Chick-fil-a instead of a chicken Caesar cool wrap will save you 210 calories and 12.5 grams of fat.

What is the most calorific food served in the nation? It is the ... you'll have to read the book to find out.

'expelled: no intelligence allowed'

RELEASED: April 18

MY THOUGHTS: This documentary-style comedy tackles controversial scientific subjects, including evolution and intelligent design. It drives home the need for complete academic freedom and addresses the way Darwinism has affected so much, including society's view on human life and its significance.

It contends that evolution played a role in eugenics (resulting in the killing of people with handicaps to "better society"). Darwin said, "In the case of man himself, hardly anyone is so ignorant as to allow his worst animals to breed."

I thought this was a fantastic film, and I'd urge all public school students studying evolution to see it.
