MONSOONS POSE THREAT: About 30 million people in southeast Asia are facing a health crisis after monsoon rains inundated cities, and floodwaters became contaminated. The death toll already ranges in the hundreds, but officials are warning of higher casualties because of poor environmental controls and because the population is mostly young and disease-susceptible.

MINERS TRAPPED: Six Utah coal miners were trapped Aug. 6 more than 1,500 feet underground when the shaft they were working in collapsed. Officials said Monday that a camera lowered into the area showed no sign of life.

CLUB CLOSED: The Augusta Commission voted Aug. 7 to close the club where an Augusta teen was slain in July. Super C's on Tobacco Road had all of its alcohol and business licenses revoked after several violent incidents were capped off by the shooting of Stedmund Fryer, 18.

HISTORIC BONDS: Barry Bonds broke Major League Baseball's home run record Aug. 7, hitting No. 756 to break Hank Aaron's hold on the title of home run king.

NOMINEES ANNOUNCED: MTV announced the nominees for its annual video music awards. Top contenders include Justin Timberlake with seven nominations, including video of the year and male artist of the year. R&B singer Beyonce also received seven nominations. Others up for awards on the show, which will air live Sept. 9, include Amy Winehouse, Gym Class Heroes, Rihanna, Kanye West and Carrie Underwood.

HELLO KITTY PUNISHMENT: Policemen in Thailand who break the rules will have to wear hot-pink armbands featuring the Japanese icon Hello Kitty, as a mark of shame. The punishment, announced Aug. 6, will be for officers caught littering, parking in a prohibited area, arriving late or other misdemeanors.

The officers will be forced to stay in their division office and wear the armband all day. They won't wear the armband in public.
