Gibson, listed as the second-tallest player on the team, has used her size and quickness to go on a dominating run for the Lady Patriots.
In her past three games, during which the Westside girls basketball team went 3-0, she averaged 21 points, 13.7 rebounds, 3 blocks and two steals.
Besides running with point guard Christina Thomas, Gibson has done well inside with 6-foot-1 Ritzy Griffin.
“I’m a post player, but I like the fast break,” Gibson said.
Lady Patriots coach Ivory Hugee said Gibson can run as well as the guards can, an ability that has helped Westside begin the season 12-3.
The coach has also noticed Gibson has been playing at another level since the holiday tournament right before the new year.
“She’s really stepped up her game,” Hugee said. “All of a sudden, the light came on.”
Gibson and her teammates hope to extend Westside’s six-game winning streak tonight at home against Thomson. A victory would push the Lady Patriots to 3-0 in the subregion.
“I believe we can go far, if not win the region championship this year, and then go far in state,” Gibson said.
