Storm hits as graduation crowd lets out

Many proud families put off special photos of their graduates when Wednesday night’s storm broke minutes after the Augusta Technical College graduation concluded at James Brown Arena.

A frenzy of guests and grads leaving the facility raced from the arena toward their cars. Graduates stuffed  new diplomas under their gowns in an attempt to protect them from the rain.

Traffic backed up quickly on Seventh and Eighth streets, and in the blinding rain some found themselves stuck on the tracks as train came slowly around the curve.

Several drivers maneuvered frantically to get free of the tracks.
