USC signs solid class of 29

COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier says he is impressed that all his Gamecocks commitments stayed true to their promises.

South Carolina signed 29 players Wednesday, keeping all its early commitments and wrapping up Spurrier's second well-regarded class in three years.

Spurrier says it is a solid class, and recruiting coordinator Shane Beamer says it was targeted to fill several needs, including linebackers, defensive backs and receivers.

Signing day wasn't all that dramatic for Gamecocks fans. Defensive backs Stephon Gilmore and DeVonte Holloman are already enrolled.

But South Carolina did pick up one surprise. Calhoun County receiver Alshon Jeffery picked the Gamecocks after committing to Southern California.

The highly sought after wide receiver from Calhoun County is among about two dozen players being formally named future Gamecocks on Wednesday afternoon.

Jeffery was being pursued by several schools, including Southern California. He says he didn't make his decision until hours before Wednesday's announcement. Twelve of his 30 receptions last season were touchdowns.

South Carolina's recruiting class was ranked ninth by and 11th by early Wednesday afternoon.

The Gamecocks finished 7-6 in 2008, losing their last three games by an average of more than 29 points.
