Has there ever been a story of more woe than what will happen to Fort Discovery? The question is, what can go into a space split into galleries, equipped with a theater and designed for field trips that doesn't require a massive remodeling? Well, how about another museum? What about the Morris?

Steve Hall is probably the most successful independent promoter working in Augusta today -- and he doesn't even live here. Mr. Hall, of Alabama, is responsible for most of the radio rock shows booked in clubs, pubs and other venues around town.

The Imperial Theatre is not the most glamorous venue in the world. It's not the biggest, or newest. For that matter, it isn't the oldest, either. But there's something special about the Imperial, something that can't be defined by its physical space. The Imperial is beloved.

Few would argue with the axiom "too much of a good thing." Most people have experienced the unpleasant aftermath of overindulgence. It can be the pumpkin pie bloat after a Thanksgiving feast, a pounding head morning after cocktails and carousing, or a ticket for speeding. It also applies to bands.

I hate keeping secrets. It isn't that I can't keep them, but I find it kind of a drag. It's probably part of the reason I got into reporting, a license to spill beans. It's also the reason I've decided to ignore my previous promise to release the names of the 2009 Singer-Songwriter Contest finalists next week.

All my life, I've wanted to be one of those fortunate few that can claim to have been present at a historic concert. I wanted to be able to say I was there when Jimi set his Strat alight, when James Brown brought his rumble to the jungle, or when Ozzy bit the bat.

The good folks at Casa Blanca, 936 Broad St., have gotten into the spirit of the Applause Singer-Songwriter contest. Their plan, which was put into effect Wednesday and continues Friday and Saturday, is to offer a few of the contestants the opportunity to perform before voting closes Sept. 4.
