Gadgetry takes center stage on silver screen
Web-posted 10/09/08
As a guy, there's a part of me that will always be attracted to gadgets. I believe it's part of our genetic makeup. I'm far from willing to stand in the cold rain waiting for an iPhone, but I am duly impressed when a proud owner shows me how neatly it has organized his mp3s.

Festival had room for improvement
Web-posted 10/03/08
After 10 days of performances and three days of recuperation, I can finally look at the inaugural Westobou Festival objectively.
Newman possessed aura that surrounds true stars
Web-posted 10/02/08
We live in an age without true movie stars. Certainly there are film actors, and some are quite successful. I mean, nobody opens a movie like Tom Cruise, but he lacks the charisma, the electricity, that the truly great stars had.
Despite layout, performance missteps, festival is most successful yet
Web-posted 09/26/08
The Arts in the Heart of Augusta festival has always been willing to evolve and change. This year marked some of the more evident shifts in recent years. Some were successful. Some were smart. Some were not.
Black, white can color our world
Web-posted 09/25/08
For years, filmmakers produced movies in black and white because there was no other choice. Even when color became available in the 1930s, the process was so expensive that only the biggest of prestige pictures were allowed the luxury of a lady in red or a blue bayou.
Song can make or break Bond movies
Web-posted 09/19/08
I'm usually more critical of a James Bond song than the movies themselves.
Alaska is ready-made setting for some of Hollywood's best films
Web-posted 09/18/08
Love her or hate her, there's one thing that must be said for Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin -- she sure has a lot of people looking north.
Ordinary people asked to save superhero's 'birthplace'
Web-posted 09/12/08
For more than 75 years, Superman has been fighting for truth, justice and the American way.
Hollywood films explore challenging world of disabilities
Web-posted 09/11/08
I am left-handed. For years, I've claimed my left-handedness as a disability, a cruel trick played by nature that has made life more difficult than it needs to be.
Why should I get my vamp on for books?
Web-posted 09/05/08
Sometimes I am not very good at my job.
Location matters when it comes to making films
Web-posted 09/04/08
Movies, just like a successful business, often depend on the location, location, location.
Do rock ballads still have staying power?
Web-posted 08/29/08
This week Daughtry (does this guy really merit the single-name thing yet?) released a version of the classic Foreigner lighter-lifter Feels Like The First Time as a recruitment tool for young voters. I'm curious as to how effective the gambit will be.
These movies' characters have forgotten more than we know
Web-posted 08/28/08
Memory can be slippery. This week, I had the fortune to reconnect with an old friend, someone with whom I had lost contact shortly after my wedding.
