Uga VIII to debut before Vandy game

ATHENS, Ga. -- The Seiler family will introduce Uga VIII, the new University of Georgia bulldog mascot, Oct. 16 at a pre-game ceremony before the homecoming game against Vanderbilt.

Uga VIII will replace Russ, half-brother of the previous mascot who stepped in when Uga VII died Nov. 19, 2009, said Swann Seiler, whose family has owned and bred the signature UGA bulldogs since 1956.

When Russ stepped forward, the Seiler family had several possible replacements for Uga VII, but all of the puppies were too young to take over at the start of this season.

Russ knew his was only a temporary position. At 5 years old, he is too old to become a permanent replacement, Swann’s father, Sonny Seiler, said over the summer.

The University of Georgia Athletic Association has not finalized arrangements for a change-of-mascot ceremony.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to take on the Commodores at 12:21 p.m. in Sanford Stadium, with the game airing on the SEC Network.
