Westobou Festival to return in 2013

The Westobou Festival will return in 2013 with a five-day schedule organizers say was a proven success this year.

Festival organizers announced Friday that the arts event will be held Oct. 2-6. This year, Westobou was scaled back to five days from festival schedules of 10 days and more than two weeks in previous years.

The condensed schedule was well-received by event patrons and allowed for higher quality artistic programming, said Westobou Festival Executive Director Molly McDowell.

“We really like the format of five days and five genres,” she said.

The 2012 festival was headlined by three-time Grammy nominee Janelle Monáe, a lecture by aerialist Philippe Petit and the L.A. Dance Project. Programming has not been announced for the 2013 festival.

McDowell said ticket sales for the Monáe concert were about 1,700, which doubled the sales for the 2011 music headliner Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, she said.

The festival will return to the parade grounds at the Old Academy of Richmond County on Telfair Street for the third time, McDowell said.

Who cares whether it returns. This year's Festival had nothing of interest compared to previous years for my family. The art I saw exhibited in North Augusta was weird and lacked family appeal. This will never be a significant Festival.

Enjoyed it very much

Other than the fact that I screwed up my left leg doing half splits when Maceo Parker was playing, I thoroughly enjoyed the event. Now that I know the VIP routine and where to park then I am sure next year will be an even more enjoyable event.
