Pop Rocks: Benefit will help family who's supported arts

It is easy, it turns out, to give to givers.

The Menger family has, over the course of many years, established itself as generous and enthusiastic patrons of the arts. Staunch supporters of the music and visual arts community in Augusta, the Mengers have been the family that gave musicians a place to play (we miss you, Squeaky’s) and artists advice and an example of the rewards creativity for its own sake can garner. They never asked anything in return. Never sought the spotlight or solicited praise. That isn’t their style.

Which is what makes lending a helping hand so easy to do.

On Aug. 29, Julie and Rich Menger welcomed a son, Milo, into the world. Unfortunately, young Milo’s debut hasn’t been as simple as his family had hoped. Born with a congenital heart defect known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome, the left side of his heart did not develop fully in utero and he will require extensive surgery. It’s a situation that has prompted the many friends, fans and acquaintances of the Mengers to rally around the family.

From 8 to 10 p.m. Sept. 8, a benefit for Milo Menger will take place at Sky City, 1157 Broad St. The event will feature music and a silent auction featuring items donated by many of the artists the Mengers have befriended and supported over the years. Donors include Micheal Morve, Shishir Chokshi, Raoul Pacheco, Jay Jacobs, wierhouse, Staci Swider, Jeff Thomas, Karen Banker, Jason Craig and Leonard “Porkchop” Zimmerman.

A variety of gift certificates, baskets and retail items will also be up for auction – everything from roller derby swag to blown glass.

It’s important to note that the Mengers have not asked for any of this. They wouldn’t and, to be quite honest, they’ve had more pressing matters on their mind. It’s what makes this benefit so special. There’s real benefit – to all involved – when the opportunity arises to give back to a family that has, and continues to, give so much.

LOOKING AHEAD: In the coming months, Radar Cinema – a band I’ve long admired – seems close to releasing its debut record. There’s a litany of interesting acts being booked – from the big names at Westobou to club dates by the likes of Van Hunt and the Felice Brothers. You know why I like the fall? Because it’s cool.
