GreenJackets’ home season starts April 13

The Augusta GreenJackets are celebrating their past during the 2017 season while looking to the future in the final year at their current home.

With one season remaining at Lake Olmstead Stadium before the planned move to North Augusta’s riverfront in 2018, the GreenJackets are seeking to celebrate their long connection to the ballpark with style, including a special logo promoting the final year. Several promotions for this season are aimed at honoring the team’s past.

“We’re excited. This is a celebration season,” GreenJackets general manager Tom Denlinger said.

“We have 70 games and 70 promotions. There’s something every night to touch the fans throughout the CSRA. We’re going to celebrate our history.”

Such promotions include decade-themed weekends, including the ’80s and ’90s, to honor the teams that played during those periods. A highlight is an Augusta Pirates weekend July 7-8 that includes special jerseys, as well as a Pirates hat giveaway July 7.

Augusta will have 15 collectible giveaway nights during the summer, nine fireworks shows, Independence Day at home and Military Appreciation Night on July 22.

Other giveaways include a team calendar May 12, tote bag May 13, golf towel June 18, an Auggie bobblehead Aug. 4, a Jon Lester bobblehead Aug. 25, a team T-shirt Sept. 2 and multiple posters.

To start things off, the first 3,500 guests for opening night will receive a schedule magnet and can enjoy a pre-game concert by Brent Lundy.

The GreenJackets will wear military camo jerseys each Saturday home game that will be auctioned off Sept. 2 to benefit Augusta Warrior Project. They’ll wear a Pink in the Park jersey May 13 and the Pirates jersey July 8.

Augusta’s popular daily promotions will return, including Thirsty Thursday, Feed Your Face Mondays, Baseball Bingo Wednesdays and military-themed Saturdays.

“The GreenJackets’ front office staff has been busy planning a jam-packed promotional lineup for the 2017 season, and the daily promotions schedule is the tip of the iceberg,” Denlinger said.

A packed giveaway schedule and daily promotions mean plenty is in store for GreenJackets fans in the final year at Lake Olmstead. The team has designed it as a season to celebrate the ballpark and its role in Augusta.

“Our new tag line for this season is ‘Leaving the lake, ruling the river,’ ” Denlinger said.

Pop Rocks: Augusta, my Christmas wish list has one thing

My family often accuses me of being a difficult person to Christmas shop for. While it is true that my tastes run toward the particular and tend to lean heavily on easy-to-wrap standards such as books and records, I believe that as I get older, I’m less concerned with the item than the idea. Give me something I believe you have thought about and carefully considered, and I’m happy. The present clearly purchased at the drug store the day before is met with considerably less enthusiasm.
