Christmas tree farms offer family fun

Many people are planning to spend today with family and friends, but the quality time doesn't have to end after dinner.

Consider planning a family outing to select a live Christmas tree.

Several Christmas-tree farms in the area will open Friday.

The activity is sure to put everyone in the holiday spirit and give you an opportunity to work off some calories from your hearty Thanksgiving feast.

The trip will likely set the mood for you to remember some cherished memories from past holidays. Here are a couple of area Christmas-tree farms:

GAY'S CHRISTMAS TREE FARM, 2335 Tobacco Road, Augusta, (706) 798-3731

Starting this weekend, the farm is open from 9 a.m. to dark on Friday, 9 a.m. to dark on Saturday and 1 p.m. to dark on Sunday. Monday through Friday the farm's hours are 2 p.m. until dark.

The farm has about 5,000 trees, including Leyland cypress, Carolina sapphire, Murray cypress and Fraser fir. Saws are provided, or employees will help you cut the tree.

Gay's Christmas Tree Farm also has free hayrides on weekends, hot chocolate and popcorn.

The farm opens Friday. Hours are from 2 p.m. to dark Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to dark Saturday and 1 p.m. to dark Sunday.

Clarks Hill offers Virginia pine, white pine, Leyland cypress, Carolina sapphire, Deodar cedar and Clemson greenspire.

Clarks Hill Christmas Tree Farm has hayrides, boiled peanuts, hot chocolate, snacks and drinks.
