Hearing kid say darndest thing made me cry, laugh

Kids say the darndest things! What is a reality is that often the things they say are funny little truths and innocent facts of life.

Recently I was hanging out with an 8-year-old buddy of mine. For sake of anonymity and this story, (not really ... mostly because she wants to be a singer and loves Beyonce) I'll call her the Fabulous Ms. Bee (FMB for short).

The Fabulous Ms. Bee was on the floor coloring when out of nowhere, she said "Ms. Cher, what do you think is the best thing about you?" WOW ... I must say I was a little taken aback. Although innocent enough, I can't remember anyone ever asking me that at least not since I've been an adult.

Now keep in mind that the Fabulous Ms. Bee, although just 8 years old, is quite intelligent; she is sometimes unnerving in her candor but innocently sweet. I thought on her question for a brief moment and decided against saying my cooking (too many people would protest) so instead I replied, "I guess I'd have to say, I like my sense of humor. I think I'm pretty funny."

She frowned, shook her head, looked me straight in the eyes and said, "No, Ms. Cher, that's not the right answer."

Instantly amused, I said "OK, you tell me what is the best thing about me."

She got up from her coloring book, walked over to me, put her arms around my waist and said, "Ms. Cher, listen, I don't mean to hurt your feeling but your jokes are not always funny. I only laugh to make you happy."

"Oh!" I said, "OK, well then what's the answer?"

"Duhhh," she sighed. "Ms. Cher, the best thing about you is the way you love; the way you love your mommy and daddy and your dog and your job, your friends and me.

"So the next time somebody asks you that question, you'll get a smiley face because you're gonna get it right. Right, Ms. Cher? Don't you want a smiley face?"

"I'd love a smiley face, FMB," I replied, tearing up a bit.

"Don't cry, Ms. Cher," she said, "I promise you won't get it wrong when your teacher at work asks you what the best thing about you is. Just say what I told you and you'll get it right."

I laughed out loud thinking of my boss drawing a smiley face. Yes, kids sure do say the darn-dest things, and isn't that the best thing about them?
