Avery Villines has performed in her share of not-so-funny comedies, but The Fox on the Fairway is not one of them.

“It’s a blast. Some of the hardest things we’ve had to do are not laugh at each other during rehearsals,” said Villines, who plays Pamela Peabody in this Ken Ludwig farce that will be presented by Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre on May 10, 11, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25. Dinner begins at 7 p.m., followed by the show at 8 p.m.

Rival country clubs, golf and love are intermingled with witty dialogue and lots of slamming doors.

“This is a tribute to old British farce, an ode to Groucho Marx movies. It has very broad humor and a very classic style,” said director Steve Walpert.

The plot has some twists and turns to keep the audience guessing, and if audience members haven’t laughed enough, then the ending is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

“The curtain call takes things to a new level. We have to do the entire show as fast as humanly possible with no dialogue,” said Villines.

Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre has performed its share of farces and a few of Ludwig’s shows, including Moon Over Buffalo, which garnered the dinner theater numerous Army Festival of Performing Arts awards in 2006. With a golf theme, The Fox on the Fairway should appeal to Augusta audiences, according to Walpert.

“I thought it would be fun to do a play about golf in Augusta in the spring,” said Walpert.

Tickets cost $45-$35 or $30 for the show only. For reservations, call (706) 793-8552.

The public is welcome to Fort Gordon, said Walpert; however, all patrons 16 years old and older must have a photo ID. Non-Department of Defense cardholders must enter through Gate 1 with a valid drivers’ license, registration and insurance.
