Wayne O'Bryant and Synita McKie Gardner are both descendents of Hamburg residents and are seen here checking out the Hamburg exhibit on its opening day June 28 at The Arts & Heritage Center in North Augusta.

The Arts and Heritage Center of North Augusta will have its third annual Arts and Heritage Day on Saturday, July 21.

The free event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is held in celebration of the center’s birthday, said executive director Lauren Virgo.

“This is our day to celebrate our existence,” she said. “It’s a great day for the community to come in and learn more about their history and the community.”

This year’s event will feature several seminars on topics such as preserving family heirlooms, family genealogy, the history of Hamburg before and after the Civil War, and a viewing of the Horse Creek Valley movie, which recently won a Silver Telly Award.

“We have a strong focus on Hamburg history because we have the Hamburg exhibit up and it’s our centerpiece this year,” she said. “I would love for people to come out and view the exhibit.”

The exhibit, which opened in late June, will be up through Aug. 24 and features a chronological history of Hamburg. It also features original artifacts, replicas, artwork and short biographies of famous people who lived in Hamburg.

The event will include a book signing with local history authors and feature books from the Augusta Genealogical Society and the Heritage Council of North Augusta.

Attendees may also visit the center’s other exhibits, its gift shop and purchase local history books.
