Music By Turner: These concerts are worth a road trip

When it comes to music, people playing in Athens always turns it up a notch. A strong SEC town always deserves the best, right?

After all, there’s lots of discerning music fans at the home of the Bulldogs. Musicians are aware that they had better bring their “A” game to Athens because one never knows just who might be in the crowd. Hmmm … isn’t that Mike Mills over there?

The 16th annual Athfest is set for June 20-24 and features 150 bands on indoor and outdoor stages. Some of the indoor venues include the Melting Pot, the 40 Watt, and of course the cozy and recently renovated Georgia Theatre.

The musicians in this year’s Athfest include Modern Skirts, Lera Lynn (who’s performed locally this year at Sky City and at the Papa Joe’s Banjo-B-Que Bluegrass Festival), The Producers, Elf Power, The Glands, and the always good Randall Bramblett Band.

Local faves Funk You and Bloodkin are also on the impressive bill. There’s even a Prince cover band for late-night revelers – and in Athens, with the exception of Vince Dooley, who isn’t?

Full info on the artists and venues can be found at athfest.com. It should be a great weekend, especially if you stay away from anybody on the UGA football team. Coach Richt just might be watching you.

THE SEA OF...BLU-RAY DEPT? Yellow Submarine, the groundbreaking and legendary Beatles animated feature film, has inexplicably been out of print for almost five years. Today, we know the reason why: a new Blu-Ray version of the classic feature is now available. It boasts the best quality ever as the latest video and audio technology has given a marvelous technical facelift to the film that will please even the most ornery Blue Meanie.

SEVERAL NEW CONCERT announcements from Chastain Park include Barry Manilow, July 29, The Allman Brothers Band (with moe opening) Aug. 1, Duran Duran, Aug. 19, and a sweet evening of the blues from Grammy winners the Tedeschi-Trucks Band and BB King set for Aug. 26.

FOREPLAY SOUTHERN-STYLE DEPT. Classic Rock icons Boston are returning to Georgia on their first U.S. tour in four years. Let’s see, will they play in Atlanta? Nope. What about maybe Macon, or even that new venue in Alpharetta?

That’s not gonna happen either. Maybe Boston will play in Augusta, a town that recently went bonkers over … Rick Springfield?

Wait a second, let me think about that one. No!

With only Tom Scholz remaining from the hit-making days, Boston is performing at the (get ready for this) Wild Adventures Theme and Water Park in Valdosta. The band’s current lead singer Tommy DeCarlo was discovered singing Boston tunes on Myspace (!?&?) a year after original singer Brad Delp’s suicide. Gee, haven’t you always wanted to do a little tube action while listening to More Than a Feeling?

Me neither.

LAST WEEK’S contest winner is Dr. David Freeman, who wins a free lunch for his entire office staff to the Green Jacket restaurant on Washington Road. Those famous salads are always the best at the Green Jacket!

TURNER’S QUICK NOTES: Soulsters Grace Potter and the Nocturnals’ fourth studio offering The Lion, The Beast, The Beat is new this week … Adele’s 21 just marked its’ 67th week on the charts. The Grammy Award-winning album has moved more than 9 million copies since its release … Govt. Mule visits Chastain Park on June 17.
