Benderdinker sets up fun on land, water

Whether it’s on land or the water, the inaugural Benderdinker promises to provide a fun-filled day of activities Saturday, April 28, at Riverside Park in Evans.

The event will start at 10 a.m. as participants are invited to jump in a kayak or canoe and paddle out on the Savannah River, event organizer Kristina Williams said.

Participants can paddle their way to three checkpoints set up around Germany Island and near Betty’s Branch, where they’ll be treated to refreshments and live music.

“It’s really easy to do,” Williams said of kayaking. “It’s just really peaceful.’’

The 6-mile voyage loops back to Riverside Park and is scheduled to end by 1 p.m.

Starting at noon is the second part of the event, called the “local fest,” which includes a mini farmer’s market, arts and crafts, food vendors, farm animals, live music and activities for children, Williams said.

“We’ve got so many different things going on,” she said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Williams and a childhood friend held an event similar to Benderdinker last year in Wisconsin.

“We really took what we did up there and expanded it,” she said.

Augusta Locally Grown and Westbrook Securities are partnering to play host to the event.

All proceeds will benefit Augusta Locally Grown, Columbia County Cares, Savannah Riverkeeper and Camp Sweet Life, a camp for children with type 1 diabetes.

Williams said she has already received an “overwhelmingly positive” response, noting that people from Atlanta and north Georgia are expected to attend.

“Hopefully it’ll be something that brings people in from all over,” she said.

Williams reminds visitors to bring sunscreen.

Admission is free to the local fest, while registration costs $35 for the paddle portion of Benderdinker.

Participants can register at Catchphrase Cafe in the Columbia County Library, Escape Outdoors in Evans and Broadway Bait and Tackle in Augusta.

Kayak rentals also can be set up for an additional charge at the latter two locations.
