This year, WPRW-FM 107.7 will host Powerfest 2K12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday,
April 14, at the Augusta Exchange Club Fairgrounds, 301 Hale St.
Artists Travis Porter, Shawty Lo, Yung LA, OMG Girlz, Ca$h Out, Mykko Montana and Goon United will perform and, according to Minnesota Fattz, the director of urban programming for Clear Channel Radio’s WPRW and WKSP-FM 96.3, it’s going to be the best Powerfest yet.
“This year is going to be huge for us,” he said. “Because the Powerfest is like a staple in the community, bringing the biggest names here to Augusta is always fun and exciting, and even some of the artists look forward to it.”
Boys From Augusta and J’ Chere were the Takeover Talent winners this year, earning the most votes in an online contest, and will perform at Powerfest.
The three young men called D-Lo, Punnisha and Young Fye make up Boys From Augusta, a group of Augusta natives.
The trio said they enjoy performing and are “hype” about Saturday’s event.
“Because this is our third year in a row performing, we weren’t expecting to be chosen as the talent takeover winner again,” D-Lo said.
“Regardless, though, we are going to perform great at the Powerfest and give the audience what they want.”
At Powerfest, grills and coolers are not allowed, but spectators can bring lawn chairs and blankets. Besides musical performances, the event features the Empire Auto Car and Bike Show and more than 40 vendors selling food, clothes, jewelry and art.
Although Powerfest has grown over the years, Fatz still aims to make it an event that people of all ages can enjoy.
“I like to make the Powerfest an event where youth of all ages can attend and their parents know that they are at a safe, fun-filled event,” he said.
Boys From Augusta plans on bigger and better things this year, but the performers always will remember where they started and where they come from.
“It doesn’t matter if we go to Australia or Canada,” D-Lo said. “We will always be Boys From Augusta.”
Tickets for Powerfest are $12 in advance or $20 the day of the event with proceeds benefitting the Augusta Partnership for Children. To purchase tickets, visit Power107.net.
The event will also be broadcast on WPRW-FM 107.7, power107.net and through the iHeartRadio smartphone app.
