“People don’t really know what to expect. People are not completely familiar with popera,” said Il Voce member Tiffany Desrosiers. “It’s not too opera, and it’s not too pop.”
Popera blends popular music with more classical pieces. Il Voce’s repertoire features Broadway show tunes, contemporary pieces made popular by Adele and classical arias.
Audience members should expect the unexpected.
“We do the song Unchained Melody. To take it to more of a popera feel, we sing it in Italian,” Desrosiers said.
And at the other end of the spectrum, the song O Sole Mio is performed in such a way as to showcase each of the four vocalists.
While there are other classical crossover groups, most of them, such as the Canadian Tenors, are all male. Il Voce features two male and two female vocalists.
In between songs, there are moments of humor.
“There’s really a good connection with each of us. We have a lot of fun together,” Desrosiers said.
Il Voce’s performance is made possible by the Aiken Performing Arts Group, a nonprofit presenting organization that brings professional artists to the Aiken community.
The concert will be at 8 p.m. at the URS Center for the Performing Arts, 126 Newberry St. SW in downtown Aiken. Tickets cost $40 for adults and $20 for students with ID and can be purchased at the APAG Web site, www.aikenperformingartsgroup.org or by calling the URS Center for the Performing Arts box office, (803) 648-1438.
The Il Voce concert is the final one in the subscriber season.
Next season’s lineup will be announced at the beginning of the concert.
