Birthday parties are great, especially when you’re a kid. My two boys have had and have gone to countless parties the past few years, and one thing strikes me about each – they’re all physically active.
We’ve gone to inflatable bounce parties, swimming parties, lacrosse parties, hockey parties and soccer parties. Every time, the kids are constantly moving. As adults, think about all the parties you’ve gone to recently. Chances are, there was some sitting, a little drinking and plenty of eating. Besides the birthday cake, there’s a bit of a difference between a child’s party and a gathering of thirty-somethings.
That’s why kids are often so fit with unlimited energy. The activity rating of an average 6-year-old is off the charts; and the more activity, the more endurance. Granted, these days children are inundated with television and video games, but if you present them with the proper outlet, they’re ready to roll.
So what’s my point? If you’re looking to have some fun and hang with friends, try having a kids’ party for yourself. Not necessarily a birthday party, but grab a couple buddies and play a game of laser tag. I’ll bet you’ll have more fun than you’ve had in years.
One of the best parts of a personal, adult, kids’ party, is that you don’t need to have a special occasion. Just invite a few people to the house, rent a couple sumo wrestling suits and rumble in the backyard. Fun had, calories burned.
If you’re not the sumo wrestling type, there are other options to get together with friends, stay active and have fun. Something as simple as organizing a group walking club will accomplish the same thing. If the objective is to be fit and have fun, the options are limitless.
It’s not all about partying and having fun, but about physical and mental fitness. Physically, more fun exercise means you’ll be more active. Emotionally, more time spent with friends means you’ll be happier. Both are vital to overall improved health.
While you’re at it, when you’re at your son’s and daughter’s party, join in on the fun. Get on the inflatable slide and take a couple turns. Not only will your fitness level improve, but so will your relationship with your children.

It’s smoked salmon on cucumber.
Start by whipping four ounces of cream cheese, a quarter cup of heavy cream and a teaspoon of lemon juice until smooth. On sliced cucumber, place a dollop of the cheese mixture and top with a small slice of smoked salmon.
Garnish with dill and salt and pepper to taste. It’s a quick, easy, healthy and delicious appetizer.
