She knows all of the 100 country songs that her legendary father, Johnny Cash, considered to be the most essential country songs in the world.
So far she’s only revealed less than 15 of those songs in interviews and recorded 12 of them on her 12th studio album, The List, released in 2009.
Cash said she’s keeping the rest of the songs private in case she wants to do a follow-up album picking from the rest of the list.
Chances are she will do a song or two from that list when she performs at 7 p.m. Sept. 30 on the parade grounds of the Old Academy of Richmond County building in the 500 block of Telfair Street.
Her appearance is being presented by The Blind Willie McTell Blues Festival as part of the 2011 Westobou Festival. Canadian country-rock act Blue Rodeo will open.
Tickets are $30 advance or $40 at the gate and can be bought by calling (706) 755-2878 or online at westoboufestival.com.
The recording artist is the daughter of Cash and his first wife, Vivian Liberto Cash. She has had 11 No. 1 hit singles including her 1985 Grammy Award winning song I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Love Me.
Rosanne told National Public Radio that her father’s list of 100 essential country songs came about in the early 1970s when she was 18 and riding through the South with her father on his tour bus.
“We started talking about songs, and he mentioned one, and I said, ‘I don’t know that one.’ And he mentioned another. I said, ‘I don’t know that one either, Dad,’ and he became very alarmed that I didn’t know what he considered my own musical genealogy.
“So he spent the rest of the afternoon making a list for me, and at the end of the day, he said, ‘This is your education.’ And across the top of the page, he wrote ‘100 Essential Country Songs.’ ”
Cash said the list might be better titled 100 Essential American Songs because they covered the gamut from Appalachian tunes and American protest songs to gospel and classic country songs.
The List album included these songs that Cash had picked among his 100 essential country songs: Miss the Mississippi and You; Motherless Children; Sea of Heartbreak; Take These Chains From My Heart; I’m Movin' On; Heartaches by the Number; 500 Miles; Long Black Veil; She’s Got You; Girl From the North Country; Silver Wings and Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow.
