The Labor Day weekend concert brings together seven bands for an afternoon and evening of jazz, fusion, funk, rock, contemporary music and swing.
The festival, presented by Garden City Jazz, is headlined by Reggie Sullivan & the Resonance String Quartet.
The line up also includes Mike Frost Jazz, featuring Lauren Meccia; Bill Karp Swing; The Lunar Octopus; Tony Pearson-Shaver and ChamberJazz; and Tre Tailor and TailorMade.
“It’s incredible,” said Karen Gordon of Garden City Jazz. “Reggie Sullivan is a jazz musician, but he incorporates different types of music with the jazz.”
On Saturday, the bassist will perform with a string quartet.
“It’s a little different for this area,” Gordon said. “We’ve had him play at Candlelight Jazz. He did such an outstanding job we had to have him come back. We don’t normally do repeats.”
All proceeds from the event benefit Garden City Jazz’s Jazz4Kids programs.
The concert is free for kids 13 and younger for a reason, Gordon said.
“I am really passionate about exposing young people to jazz,” she said. “It should be affordable for them.”
Discount tickets for adults will be available following the Smooth Music Festival, which features Rachelle Ferrell and Boney James the day before Uncommon Jazz.
