"Our thing right now is getting people aware of just how many independent bands there are. There are many you've never heard of on the radio. Just because someone is not on a label doesn't mean they aren't as good. We are trying to do it on our own as long as we can. We want people to take the time and be conscious of who they listen to," said Ayers, the drummer for the Tampa, Fla.-based band Not Tonight Josephine, which performs Saturday at the Playground Bar.

The band released its first full-length album, All on the Horizon , on Tuesday, and Augusta is the second stop on its first major tour, Ayers said.

"This has been over a year in the making," he said of the recording. "We were originally hoping for January. We had an EP last year and said, 'Let's make an album.' It snowballed."

Ayers describes the band as hard rock, and Not Tonight Josephine is working hard to break off a tag of "emopunk" given to it by a Tampa newspaper early in its existence. The article often comes up first during an Internet search of the bands' name, he said.

"The five guys in the band have very different tastes in music. We all just like straight rock. It's not screaming all the time. Each of us are pop fans. We like '80s stuff," he said.

The band recently did a cover of the Ace of Base song All She Wants . The track has been played on AOL Radio and is available on YouTube.

While some musicians might frown on YouTube, Ayers is all for it.

"YouTube is great," he said. "I love when people take video and put it up on YouTube -- the good, the bad and the ugly," he said.

He believes that if people get a taste of Not Tonight Josephine on the Internet, they will want to see the band in person.

Not Tonight Josephine was named Tampa's most buzz-worthy rock band by Creative Loafing in 2009 and has played at a menagerie of venues, including the Ford 300 NASCAR Championship Race, Miami Music Festival and at the House of Blues in Orlando, Fla.
