Pali Summit Pinot Noir 2008, California

WHAT: This blend of grapes from two vineyards in two counties seems to capture the best of both areas. It's a lush, smooth wine filled with plum, raspberry and currant flavors. This easy-drinking wine has ripe fruit balanced by firm tannins and was aged for 16 months in oak barrels, half of them new French oak.

But this is not a lightweight fruit bomb that fades after a couple of drinks. The oak and the soil of the vineyards provide plenty of structure for this elegant wine.

The winery says 55 percent of the wine comes from "mineral-laden, intense, red fruit from the limestone-rich Boer Vineyard," in Chalone, Monterey County, California. The rest comes from the Turner Vineyard in Santa Barbara County, which produced "lush, blue and black" fruit.

The winery says, "For us, this wine represents the 'summit' of our Cuvée Program of Pinot Noir blends."

I would chill this wine for 10 minutes or so before serving it. Then allow it some time to breathe.

WINERY: Entrepreneurs Tim Perr and Scott Knight founded Pali Winery in 2005, naming it after their hometown of Pacific Palisades, just west of Los Angeles. Perr's strong grape-grower relationships let them start by producing single-vineyard bottlings from select Pinot Noir vineyards around the state. They established a state-of-the-art winery and tasting room in Lompoc, Calif.

In 2009, Pali launched a "Cuvée Program" of Pinot Noir blends named for neighborhoods in the Pacific Palisades, and they also produced small amounts of Chardonnay, Rosé and Grenache.

The 2009 Pali Charm Acres Chardonnay Sonoma Coast ($24) also is a terrific wine. It combines flavors of citrus, lime and pineapple with pear, and some minerality. Aging eight months in oak barrels gives it a smooth, buttery feel without overpowering your taste buds.

Given the success of these wines, and the availability of premium grapes at lower costs, Perr and Knight are increasing the Pali Wine Co. production to include more Cuvée wines and varietal wines. They also produce select Proprietors' Reserve wines. All the wines except the Proprietors' Reserve and large format bottles come with screw caps.

GOES WITH: Lamb, duck, roast pork, especially if you prepare those meats on a grill. It also would go well with some hearty soups and stews. And it would be perfect for sitting around the fireplace with some munchies such as cheddar or gourmandise cheese and walnuts.
