Look for a Christmas concert and a living legend later this year in Augusta, compliments of the 12 Bands organization.

Joe Stevenson, executive director of 12 Bands, said Tuesday that Charlie Daniels will perform on Sept. 17 at the Jessye Norman Amphitheatre as part of the Westobou Festival and that the 12 Bands of Christmas CD and concert will return this year.

The 12 Bands of Christmas event took a breather last year. A Best-of CD, featuring tracks from six years worth of 12 Bands releases was issued, but no concert was held.

The CD will be released in November and the concert is scheduled for Dec. 18 at the Imperial Theatre.
Stevenson said that the public response to the 12 Band concert's conspicuous absence was only part of the reason the concert is making a comeback.

"I mean it certainly has something to do with it," he said. "But I always really liked this show. And now that we're expanding into other markets, it seems special and appropriate to do it again here, at the Imperial."

Similar 12 Bands of Christmas CDs are being released in Florida and Athens, Ga. Prices for the Augusta concert and CD and the CD release date have not been determined. Acts slated to appear include Tara Scheyer and the Mudpuppy Band, the Unmentionable, My Instant Lunch, John Kolbeck, Will McCranie, L.i.E., the Crowns, 48Volt, G-City Rockers, NoStar and Brandon Bower.

Earlier this year, the 12 Bands organization received a $25,000 grant from the Porter Fleming Foundation to bring an artist to the Westobou Festival in September. Stevenson said that while $25,000 is a large sum of money, bringing a household name to Augusta required more than just the Westobou bankroll.

"We have a relationship with Charlie Daniels," Stevenson said. "And he puts on an incredible show and is a super human being. And the thing is, when you are trying to book a big name for $25,000 you have to work those relationships."

Stevenson said Daniels, who will perform the first Friday of the 10-day Westobou festival, will serve as an appropriate counterpoint to Al Green, who closes the event the following Saturday.

"He's a player and he's a legend," he said. "He's a great act for that event."

Tickets to the Charlie Daniels performance will be available on July 1. Tickets will cost $25 in advance, $35 the day of the performance and $40 for reserved seating.
