The lead in an upcoming ice production got a lot of her ice skating training in Augusta.
Catharine League, a 27-year-old native of Columbia, S.C., sharpened her skating skills at Augusta Ice Sports Center and now skates and sings as part of Ice Creative Entertainment’s Dreams on Ice, which will be performed at the Jabez S. Hardin Performing Arts Center on Feb. 1.
“There was a small ice rink near my house,” she said. “And ice skating was my favorite thing to do. My parents had no idea what they were getting into when we started traveling to Augusta and Charleston to skate.”
While League competed in the Southeast, she was drawn more to the artistic side of the sport and relished performances of various skate shows such as Disney on Ice.
“I went to school for theater, and I was more interested in the theatrical side. I designed costumes as a kid,” said League, who has been part of Ice Creative for five years and was instrumental in the development of the idea behind this production.
Ice shows often combined the theatrical element with a recorded narrative. In this production, the skaters are also singing live.
“It definitely takes a lot of stamina,” she said. “But you use a lot of the same muscle groups for singing that you do for skating.”
The production takes the audience through League’s character’s dream of traveling through the different seasons to find winter. There are messages within the production about bravery and following your dreams. It has some fairy tale elements, and of course, it has a villain. In this case, it’s an enchantress who isn’t everything she makes herself to be.
One of League’s favorite numbers depicts the enchantress turning into the fire witch.
“It’s nothing too scary,” she said.
Other performers in the show include a hula hoop artist and a contortionist.
League said she’s excited to be returning to the Augusta area and is especially thrilled that her parents will be in the audience.
“They never miss a show,” said League, who lives in Manhattan now.
Dreams on Ice will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $37.50 and $19.50 for ages 15 and younger. For more information, call (706) 726-0366 or visit augustaamusements.com.
