Cowboys and cowgirls have lots of options these days for high-fashion Western wear.

Whether riding horses, attending the Augusta Futurity or enjoying a night on the town, it's really a matter of personal preference, said Heather Caudle, the store manager at Boots, Bridles and Britches in Aiken.

Customers can choose from an array of colors and styles to suit their likes and needs, she said.

Sam Faulk, pictured at left, is modeling Tony Lama cowboy boots that are buckaroo style, or tall, available for $139.95. Traditional cowboy boots are shorter, Caudle said.

"He has them worn on the outside of his pants," she said. "Some people tuck them in their pants, and some put their pants over them.

"It's a style thing. It's all in what you're wearing, really."

He's also wearing Cinch brand jeans ($45), a Cinch shirt ($39 to $60), a Western-style belt and a traditional cowboy hat, made of felt. Cowboy hats can run from $49 to $300.

Caudle is wearing a Brooks & Dunn Western shirt with rhinestones and designs on the front and back yoke. She also has on Cruel Girl jeans ($49 to $60) and a Nocona Belt Co. belt with a rhinestone design all over ($85), which Boots, Bridles and Britches calls its "bling belt."

Men's belts are usually more conservative, but men can change out the buckle for a dressier style, such as large silver buckles decorated with pictures of bull riders, steer heads, ropers, stars or an initial.

Caudle's black Tony Lama boots are buckaroo style ($145.95).

Both men's and women's boots are available in heel sizes, depending on the type of riding the person will be doing.

"It's about fashion, and a lot of function, too," she said.

Flat heels are worn for roping, and traditional heels are slightly higher and used for riding of all types.

Fashion heels are strictly for fashion, not riding, and are higher and more pointed.

"Some people try to ride in it, but it's not safe though. You've got to have enough for your stirrup," Caudle said.

Women can even buy boots with stiletto heels. In addition, cowboy boots come in pointed, square and round toes, Caudle said.

Men's boots are typically green, brown or black, occasionally with different colors at the top.

Women's boots reflect the colors of the rainbow, including red, blue, green, pink and purple.

They even come in black, white and pink zebra prints; black, orange and cream tiger prints, in addition to patent leather.

Jeans come in low rise, high rise, boot cut and straight leg styles.

Women can really dress things up with jewelry, Caudle said. She is shown wearing a necklace with a spur rowel by Montana Silversmith.

Pop Rocks: Augusta, my Christmas wish list has one thing

My family often accuses me of being a difficult person to Christmas shop for. While it is true that my tastes run toward the particular and tend to lean heavily on easy-to-wrap standards such as books and records, I believe that as I get older, I’m less concerned with the item than the idea. Give me something I believe you have thought about and carefully considered, and I’m happy. The present clearly purchased at the drug store the day before is met with considerably less enthusiasm.
