Lunch Money: Poblano's Mexican Grill

Poblano's offers the typical Mexican restaurant fare, but the chefs make the meals stand out.

It's all about speed at lunchtime at Mexican restaurants in Augusta:

- You're seated promptly, and chips and salsa are on the table within minutes.

- Your drink order is taken soon after the munchies arrive.

- Your food order is taken soon after the drinks arrive at the table.

- Your food is out of the kitchen within 10 minutes or so.

- You eat, pay and are out of the restaurant within 30-45 minutes, and back at work.

With such a standard regimen, the key to standing out is to offer good food and attentive service.

Go to Poblano's Mexican Grill, 341 Baston Road in Martinez, for the food.

Poblano's offers the typical Mexican restaurant fare, but the chefs make the meals stand out with attention to detail in seasoning and presentation. Spices will perk up your palate, but not overpower, and it always arrive to the table hot and fresh.

The salsa and chips are a bonus. They're just part of the routine at many restaurants, but here, it's always cold, fresh and tomatoey salsa, and the chips are consistently fresh and crunchy.

For this visit, we each had the lunch special chicken fajitas ($6.50), which includes rice, beans and tortillas. Add an iced tea and tip, and we were still out of there for less than $10 each.

Our order was taken promptly, but service was a bit indifferent. Lunch Buddy Donna asked for no tortillas with her order (she never uses them, and we hate to waste food), but they were brought to the table anyway and were left there even after the waiters were reminded of our request.

Also, we had ordered unsweet tea, but the waiters brought glasses of sweet tea out for our refills, then almost brought out more sweet tea as replacements after we reminded them that we were drinking unsweetened tea.

On past visits, servers have been more attentive and efficient. We were eating a fairly late lunch, so we'll chalk it up to a long day for the servers.

Poblano's, which takes its name from a type of mild chili pepper, also has a restaurant at 663 N. Belair Road in Evans. Call the Martinez restaurant at (706) 922-5924, or the Evans restaurant at (706) 364-3711.
