'Pandora's Box' takes top prize at festival
SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain --- The Turkish film Pandora's Box , directed by Yesim Ustaoglu , won top prize at Spain's San Sebastian Film Festival, the organization said Saturday.
American Melissa Leo won one of two best actress awards for her part in Frozen River .
The other went to French actress Tsilla Chelton for her role as Nusret in the winning film, which is called Pandoranin Kutusu in Turkish. Pandora's Box is a story of alienation and isolation in modern Turkey, a theme explored when Nusret's children discover she is beginning to suffer from Alzheimer's disease.
The festival named Britain's Michael Winterbottom best director for his drama Genova , set on Italy's northwest coast, where the port city acts as a catalyst for change in the lives of a family disoriented by bereavement.
American director Paul Thomas Anderson was awarded the Fipresci prize -- a subordinate category -- for his film There Will Be Blood .
Singer leaves hospital after second accident
SAN ANTONIO --- Grammy-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira , still recovering from injuries suffered in a bus wreck six months ago, has been discharged from a hospital after another traffic accident.
A University Hospital spokeswoman said Mr. Navaira and his wife, Maria , were discharged late Thursday, a day after their car hit a truck.
Mr. Navaira has been undergoing rehabilitation since wrecking his tour bus in suburban Houston in March. His agent, Joe Casias , did not return a call Friday from The Associated Press for comment.
Mr. Casias told the San Antonio Express-News that Mr. Navaira suffered no bone fractures but doctors "are watching him very closely."
After the Houston accident, doctors performed two brain surgeries and repaired an aneurysm in the 46-year-old performer's right lung. His doctors had been encouraged by his quick recovery but have said it is difficult to determine whether he will recover fully.
