Libraries read for summer fun



School ends this week for Richmond County schools, and libraries throughout the county have full calendars of activities to keep children and teens busy until classes resume.

Some activities are related to the summer reading program, which begins May 23. This year’s effort is called Fizz, Boom, Read, which features activities related to science. Some activities are just plain fun.

Here is a just a sampling of activities for children and teens taking place at libraries throughout the county this summer.

Makin’ Slime

When: 3-4 p.m. June 4

Where: Jeff Maxwell Library, 1927 Lumpkin Road

What: Children will learn how to make slime. The class is limited to 10 children. Registration is requried.

Amazing World of Reptiles

When: 10-11 a.m. June 5

Where: Augusta-Richmond County Library, 823 Telfair St.

What: Sean Poppy from the SRS Ecology Lab will bring a collection of snakes, lizard, turtles and more.

Summer Reading Kick-Off Party

When: Noon to 4 p.m. June 7

Where: Augusta-Richmond County Public Library, 823 Telfair St.

What: The third annual kickoff party will feature live music, inflatables, arts and crafts, sno-cones, a book sale and more. Children and their families can pick up their summer reading logs at the event.

Father’s Day Craft

When: 3-4 p.m. June 12

Where: Wallace Branch Library, 1237 Laney Walker Blvd.

What: Children can make a gift to give Dad for Father’s Day. Space is limited, so registration is required.

Scavenger Hunt

When: 5:30 p.m. May 23

Where: Augusta Richmond County Library, 823 Telfair St.

What: Teens must be in the building by 5:30 p.m. They will search for clues and win prizes. For ages 11 and older

Summer Reading Teen Photography

When: Begins May 23

Where: Friedman Branch Library, 1447 Jackson Road

What: Teens in grades 6 through 12 are invited to submit up to three photos (5x7 or larger) along with an entry form. Entries will be on display at the Friedman Branch Library to be voted on by library patrons. Deadline for submissions is June 21. Entry forms are available at the library or online at

School’s Out Step & Talent Competition

When: 7:30 p.m. May 30

Where: Augusta-Richmond County Library, 823 Telfair St.

What: Groups of youth, from church groups to a set of friends, will compete for prizes against other teens in a talent show. Participants must register in advance. For ages 11 and older.

JuniorJunior Prom

When: 5:30 p.m. June 6

Where: Augusta-Richmond County Library, 823 Telfair St.

What: Teens are asked to wear their best dresses, suits and ties, and enjoy punch and dancing with other young adults ages 11 to 17 and their parents or guardians.

Fizz Boom Bloom

When: 10-11 a.m. June 18

Where: Diamond Lakes Library, 101 Diamond Lakes Way

What: The Master Gardeners will present a program. Individual and group registration is required and begins May 5. The program is best for ages 6 to 12.
