Encore from Glenn Miller Orchestra set for January

The Glenn Miller Orchestra will play Jan. 11 in Evans.

Lovers of big band-era music have a chance to hear the nostalgic sounds of the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

The iconic group will perform at the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center inside the Columbia County Library, 7022 Evans Town Center Blvd.. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11.

A limited number of reserved tickets are available for $32 and $37.50 from (706) 726-0366 or augusta

The program is sponsored by Augusta Amusements, which is led by organizer and local promoter Mike Deas.

Deas said the appearance of the Glenn Miller Orchestra in the Augusta area is “an extraordinary event.”

“This outfit travels the world over. Big-band music is a style that typifies the brilliant and proud past of our parents and grandparents. It’s a style of music that transcends generations,” Deas said.

“We’re just grateful to host the type of music and performers who defy today’s popular culture. There were no computers or synthesizers when they created this music. It’s an authentic style. No technology was needed to create this genre,” he said.

According to an Augusta Amusements news release, “After Glenn Miller’s unexpected death in 1944, his family sanctioned the bandleader’s name to continue for generations. Although band members come and go, the music has prevailed.”

Current bandleader Nick Hilscher is an Atlanta native, Deas said.

Miller, a native of Iowa, originally played clarinet but became famous as a trombonist.

His hit compositions include Chattanooga Choo Choo, In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade and Pennsylvania 6-5000.

He died in a 1944 military plane accident over the English Channel. His body was never recovered.

Deas says he’s impressed by local music enthusiasts’ interest in Miller’s legacy.

“This is real music and it’s the type of music that people continue to crave. It’s a type of raw, natural talent that remains popular throughout the world. And, interestingly, this band performs on a regular basis – every day,” Deas said.

The band is making its encore visit after performing at the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center earlier in 2012, Deas said.

Attendees are invited to wear festive attire from the 1940s and 1950s and walk the red carpet at the entrance. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
