Singers in the community are ready to sing and shout for joy in a number of concerts planned to celebrate the holidays.
The Augusta Collegium Musicum will present its Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Sacred Heart Cultural Center, 1301 Greene St. The 25th annual concert will feature nine lessons that will be read by educators and dignitaries. Local choirs will sing in between each presented lesson.
The event is sponsored by the Sacred Heart Guild and is based on traditional services evolving from King’s College Chapel at Cambridge University in England. For information, call (706) 826-4700. Reservations are required.
From the traditional approach to a more modern one, the Augusta Amusements Big Band will perform Celebrate the Holidays at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center, 7022 Evans Town Center Boulevard; doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Rob Nordan, the music and executive director of Columbia County Orchestra Association, will lead the Augusta Amusements Big Band in song selections that will keep in spirit with the holidays while featuring classics by Bing Crosby, Count Basie, Les Brown, Stan Kenton and Duke Ellington.

On Sunday, Dec. 9, the Augusta Chorale will featuring the music of George Frederic Handel’s Messiah and Robert DeCormier’s Shout for Joy for its annual Christmas concert.
Dr. Phyllis Anderson, artistic director of the Augusta Chorale, will serve as conductor with Angela Arrington on piano. Tenor Garry Grant, a vocal performance and music education major at Augusta State University, will be the featured soloist. The Suzuki Strings of Augusta’s Senior Ensemble will accompany the Augusta Chorale.
The performance begins at 4 p.m. at the Gilbert-Lambuth Chapel at Paine College. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students. For information, call (706) 830-0991.
