Cirque de la Symphonie performers to dance on air to music by Symphony Orchestra Augusta

Vitalii Buza’s background in gymnastics might have served as a springboard to his career as a cirque performer, but the two disciplines are different.

Buza is one of the performers with the Cirque de la Symphonie, which will perform with Symphony Orchestra Augusta at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at Bell Auditorium.

Tickets are $10-$38 from or by calling (706) 826-4705.

Buza started off as a gymnast in his native Moldova and was a member of the Russian national gymnastics team. When he was 16, he joined the Moscow State Circus.

“Gymnastics is one thing, but the circus, I almost went from zero,” said Buza, who will perform an aerial act as well as in a giant wheel at this week’s performance.

Cirque de la Symphonie is an international performing troupe that synchronizes its acrobatics with music.

“It’s an attempt to raise cirque artistry to the fine arts level with classical music. It really is a visual enhancement of the symphony,” said Bill Allen, Cirque de la Symphonie’s executive director.

“People see it, and they are amazed at the dramatic effect.”

No two Cirque de la Symphonie performances are the same. Performers can do their acrobatic feats to several different pieces of music, and the individual symphonies are allowed to pick from a repertoire.

“Each symphony has different needs, different budgets,” said Allen. “It’s more interesting to come and collaborate with the symphonies.”

Cirque performs with symphonies of all sizes from ones in large cities such as Dallas to smaller orchestras such as the one in Bismarck, N.D. Already this season, Cirque has performed with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C.

Allen said another aspect of Cirque is it draws in a different type of audience.

“Grandmothers came with their grandchildren. A lot of young adults, the very people orchestras need to reach out to, and they fill up the house,” he said.
