'Legally Blonde' brings new energy to Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre

It’s a show Steve Walpert has been looking forward to producing for a while.

About 18 months ago, Walpert, the director of Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre, sent out an e-mail letting all of his patrons and volunteers know he’d acquired the rights to stage an amateur production of Legally Blonde: The Musical.

“It was restricted for a long time for non-equity productions. I knew it was a great show for young audiences and young performers as well as experienced ones. I wanted to broaden our audience and the talent,” said Walpert, who applied for the opportunity to do the show as soon as it was available.

The musical, based on the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon, opened on Broadway in 2007 and received seven Tony nominations. It is the story of a blonde California sorority girl who heads to Harvard Law School after her boyfriend dumps her.

In the end, she finds herself and proves all of her doubters wrong.

Walpert calls Legally Blonde: The Musical a “fun” but not shallow show.

“It’s a really nice story. This character grows and matures, but through all of it, she remains true to herself. She is a great character. She has high ethical standards,” he said.

Also, the character has a sense of loyalty and deep bonds of friendship from her years in a sorority, and those qualities are emphasized.

“In the end, Elle’s loyalty does win the day,” he said.

And Legally Blonde: The Musical is doing exactly what Walpert had hoped. It has brought in some fresh, new performers, and ticket sales are high, with several nights during the three-weekend run already sold out.

The musical features many high-energy songs; and in keeping with the sorority tie-in, there’s even a Greek chorus, pun intended, which shows up during the play.

Legally Blonde: The Musical will be performed March 1-2, 7-9, 14-16 at Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. with the show at 8. Tickets are $35-$45 or $30 for the show only. For reservations, call (706) 793-8552.
