Actor goes all-in for 'Harvey' at Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre

Uncle Elwood (Jeff Pullium) and his friend Harvey are a never-ending source of frustration to niece Myrtle Mae (Emily Greene) in the classic comedy Harvey.

Because of time constraints, Jeff Pullium often puts his stage endeavors on the back burner.

“I usually play character roles, like Mr. Cellophane in Chicago or Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar – the ones that are on for one scene and steal the show,” said Pullium, who plays the lead in Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre’s upcoming performance of Harvey.

Playing the part of Elwood P. Dowd in Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning show is one Pullium could not allow to pass him by, even though he is on stage for most of the show.

“He’s one of the classic characters of all time,” he said.

The play’s namesake, Harvey, is a six-foot-tall white rabbit, which can only be seen by Dowd. Dowd’s sister wants to have her brother committed into a mental institution. While the role was made famous in the 1950 film starring Jimmy Stewart, this won’t be a replay of Stewart’s characterization.

“I’ve never seen the Jimmy Stewart movie,” Pullium said.

For 2012, Steve Walpert, the director of the theater, has brought a varied menu to patrons, staging newer works such as Game Show and Almost, Maine earlier in the year.

“This is a traditional and classic comedy,” he said. “It was written in the late 1940s, and it’s a delightful show.”

Walpert calls Harvey a timeless and appealing show. Dowd is a character many people enjoy.

“He chooses a simpler course in life. He doesn’t allow stress to get into his life,” he said. “He’s not dimwitted or slow; he refuses to let life wag him by the tail.”

Harvey will be presented on Nov. 9, 10, 16, 17 and 30 and Dec. 1 at Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre, Third Avenue, Building 32100. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. followed by the show at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40-$30; $25 for the show only.

Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre is open to the public; however, anyone without a Department of Defense identification must enter through Gate 1 on Gordon Highway. Photo IDs are required for those 16 years old and older, and valid vehicle registration and insurance is required for admittance.
