Artist Portrait: Ruth Pearl

Ruth Pearl is finally coming into the place artistically where she’s wanted to be for many years.

“I decided at the age of 5 or 7 that a famous artist was what I was going to be,” she said.

A native of London, Pearl studied art in college. She taught art for several years in various locations including a European school in Kenya and a Montessori school in Ohio. While living in South Africa she also worked with amateur theater groups by painting sets.

Pearl recently became part of the group of artists at Gallery on the Row on Broad Street, where her work is on display.

She gains her inspiration from nature. When she’s on vacation, she scopes out the botanical gardens and art museums.

“I like the natural world,” she said. “I love plants. I love to be in gardens.”

Other pieces of art focus on the human form.

Always learning more and sharpening her skills, Pearl said she’s become interested in using texture in her work.

Her daughter, Hannah Elliott, may have gleaned some of her mother’s artistic genes. Elliott is a graphic designer at Wier/Stewart.

In addition to Gallery on the Row, Pearl’s pieces can be seen at her Web site
