Partnerships inspire LINES' new pieces

Alonzo King's LINES

A firm believer in collaboration, choreographer Alonzo King has built his reputation, and San Francisco-based LINES dance company, on the belief that dance is most effective and affecting when part of a creative partnership.

To that end, he has built pieces around collaborations with jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders; Bernice Johnson Reagon, founder of Sweet Honey in the Rock; actor Danny Glover and 16 musicians and dancers from the Lobaye Forest of Central African Republic. He also experimented with combining elements of Eastern and Western movement in a martial arts/ballet collaboration with Shaolin monks.

Alonzo King's LINES will perform Friday at the Imperial Theatre, wrapping the Augusta Ballet's 2009-10 season. The event will be followed by the ballet's annual gala, to be held at the Richmond Hotel.
