When it comes to comedy, Etta May draws from her daily life, and audiences can relate.
“That’s where my comedy comes from. I just wait for my husband or kids to do something stupid, and then I write it down,” she says on her Web site, ettamay.com.
With four kids, the Queen of Southern Sass has a lot of funny fodder and will bring her Southern-fried comedy to Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center in Evans at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, as part of Augusta Amusements’ lineup of performers.
Etta May has won the American Comedy Awards “Stand-Up Comic of the Year” and has appeared on Oprah and Comic Strip Live and is part of the Southern Fried Chicks Tour.
Her performances have been on XM radio. She has appeared on Comedy Stage, Comedy Club, Hanging With Mr. Cooper, VH-1’s Stand-Up Spotlight, My Two Dads, Jeff Foxworthy and Davis Rules.
Mike Deas, the organizer of Augusta Amusements’ performances, said this is the first time he has scheduled a comic.
“I wanted to do something different,” he said. “We have jazz, blues, children’s performers. I’m trying to find what it is that captures CSRA audiences.”
Deas had seen Etta May in Miami and could envision her show as perfect “ladies night” type of event.
“I can see a lady and three or four girlfriends going out to have dinner and seeing this,” he said. “Her humor is something many females can relate to.”
Tickets cost $27.50 and $37.50. For more information, call (706) 726-0366 or visit augustaamusements.com.
