AIKEN – South Carolina Education Lottery confirmed today that the Mega Millions Lottery will begin in Aiken County and across the state Sunday.

The ticket sales will begin at local gas stations Sunday, but the first drawing won’t be held until Feb. 2, said spokeswoman Julie Huffman.

“The powers that be are hoping this will mean more money for education in South Carolina,” Huffman said.

The education lottery account is expected to grow between $15 million and$22 million with the addition of the game, Huffman said. The multistate lottery began in 1996, and currently has drawings in 12 other states including Georgia. The jackpot starts at $12 million, and other prizes from $2 to $250,000 are also offered, according to the Mega Millions Web site.

South Carolina would continue to offer such lottery games as Powerball, Pick 3, Pick 4 and Palmetto Cash.

There will be Mega Millions kickoff events offering free food and prizes from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 2 in North Augusta at Greg’s Gas Plus on Martintown Road, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 5 at Kent’s Corner on Pine Log Road.
